Chapter 40
Paris, France
Four days after abduction
JOSH AND MARISSA were still steaming about the royal runaround Rex had given them when they walked into their hotel room just before midnight. They were jetlagged and tired and grumpy.
But then, there he was, waiting for themâin their room. Rex Dalton, the man they'd been chasing for more than a year.
They stared straight into his Sig Sauer P226. Digger, the big black dog, not a djinn which they heard so much about and only half-believed in its existence, was standing next to him, on alert, his lips pulled back in a snarl, though he was silent.
They froze in their tracks.
Rex had deactivated the remaining bugs before theyâd arrived. The DGSE didnât need to know everything about his business. The need-to-know principle worked both ways.
Rex told his former colleagues to close the door, put their guns and knives and mobile phones on the table, and to take out the batteries. Then he told them to strip, Marissa to keep her bra and panties and Josh his boxer briefs.
Josh scoffed. Marissa was much more vocal, complained and protested, âIâve heard a lot about you, Dalton, but no one told me on top of everything else youâre also a nut job and a pervert.â
âYeah, well, Iâve learned a long time ago I can only please some people some of the time not everyone all the time. So, shut up and take it off.â
Josh started to open his mouth to support the protest, but evidently something in Rexâs expression told him Rex was not playing games, and by the looks of it the dog was getting impatient as well.
With Digger backing him up, Rex searched them, making them lean against the wall, face to the wall, supported by their arms and their legs spread. Rex, being a male and nothing wrong with his testosterone levels, couldnât help but notice what a beautiful woman Marissa was, even before she took off her clothes. He would have apologized to her for the necessity to touch her, but his observations of her during the day told him she was a trained professional and would know he wasnât just copping a feel. Even if she didnât, he didnât care. This was about his security, and he considered it necessary, no matter who it offended.
While he searched them, he paid close attention to Diggerâs behavior. Heâd been with Digger for long enough to know that it was important to pay close attention to the signals the dog was giving when he met people for the first time. Digger was a four-legged lie detector that outstripped any man-made device or human observations. Digger had carefully sniffed at both of them in turn before he took a step back and sat down behind them, about one pace away. Heâd looked at Rex and âsmiled,â mouth open and tongue lolling out as if to say, âTheyâre okay, you can trust them.â
Despite Diggerâs assurances, Rex continued to hold them at gunpoint. He allowed Marissa to put on a robe for modesty but left Josh in his briefs.
